There are so many products out there marketed for “healthy hair” that it’s hard to know what to try. Many of us are content with our old tools and products because they get the job done. But are they doing the correct job? Here’s why you should always invest in quality products.

I have always used a random paddle brush that I bought on a whim one day to brush out and untangle my hair. This brush was inexpensive and has lasted me for years, leading me to assume it was a good quality brush. Lately I have been trying to slowly invest in more quality products and tools that will help preserve my coloured hair, and to overall improve my hair health. I started to notice that it seemed like I was shedding so much more using my brush than I would with my wide tooth comb. It is very discomforting to see huge clumps of hair in your brush and knowing that all came from your head. Additionally, one of the biggest issues I have noticed lately is tiny fragments of hair shedding upon brushing it. It would seriously look as if I just got a trim. That’s when I realized that my trusted durable brush was breaking and pulling out my hair.

As many of us do, I turned to my computer and scoured the internet to find the “best brushes”, especially for untangling hair. To know one’s surprise, there was an overwhelming amount of suggestions, and with each brush, for every positive and selling review I found, it was followed by complaints or better suggestions.

That’s when I turned to an expert, which many of you are very familiar with. I asked my stylist, Tatiana, which of the many brushes that I found online would be the best for my hair. She explained to me why brushes with poor quality bristles, no matter the price of the brush, will not be the best option for my hair. Here is what we discussed:

• compact and non-ventilated brushes trap more dead skin, dirt, oils, hair, and are difficult to clean
• bristles that are too thin or long will get bent or break, damaging your hair
• weak bristles break or lose their tips, snagging your hair
• short bristles cannot comb through your hair as well
• other bristles that are too hard have no give, ripping through your hair

All of these factors above will lead to fall-out, breakage and ultimately unhealthy hair. She really educated me and shared her experiences with many of the brushes I showed her, and while she thought they’d be better than my previous tool, she had something even better for me. This brush isn’t going to magically reverse the damage done by other tools, however it will help prevent future damage.
